Branko promises “No more gifts” to opponents
Team Melli crashed in three short minutes against Mexico. Everyone is focusing on Mirzapour’s mistake, but the problems are much deeper than that.
All day Mexico ran balls down the left side of Iran’s field. That is Nosrati’s side.
A number of times (I have watched the game two times now) Kaebi and Rezaei had to come all the way to the left side to cover for him.
I don’t know why Nosrati keeps going AWOL. If it is his mistake, change him for goodness sake. And if it is a coaching decision to send him up the field, call him back then. This tactic is clearly NOT working!!!!!
Branko Ivankovic told reporters that “No more gifts to opponents!” But I tell you, there will be more gifts unless something is done about our goalkeeper and left back positions.

Despite the fact that Daei won’t be playing in the game against Portugal Iran won’t be in a very good shape. Karimi and Mahdavikia are the engines of Iran’s attack game. Against Mexico they were both playing at 50% or less. Nonetheless, their delivery of the ball generated Iran’s main chances to score (Karimi’s pass to Hashemian whose header was blocked by the goalie and Mahdavikia’s corner kick which resulted in the goal).
Karimi’s injury got worse during the game (that’s why he left) and his full recovery before the Portugal game is doubtful. He can be replaced by Madanchi (for the entire game or just the second half) who has been playing great football lately. Madanchi is very fast but he’s also younger and doesn’t have Karimi’s experience in club and internation level. The advantage that Madanchi may have is that he is much less known for the opposite team so they may not try to cover him as much as they would with Karimi.
Taymourian who did a great job against Mexico as a defensive midfielder may be able to replace Zandi on the left and provide some defensive support for Nosrati who did a pathetic job against Mexico. If you watch the Mexico game again you’ll see that when we were about to receive our second goal Nosraty was nowhere to be seen. And again when the Mexican players attacked from our left to score their third goal Nosrati (our left defender) was slowly walking (not even running) close to the midfield line, about 20 meters away from the ball and behind the Mexican attack. I used to criticize Golmohammadi for our defensive problems but Nosrati has been doing such an awful job that I don’t dare criticize Golmohammadi any more, especially after the goal he scored against Mexico. Unfortunately, we don’t have anyone better to replace Nosrati so our only other option is to have our left midfield player support Nosrati. Taymourian would probably be the best player for such a role. Borhani could then take on the attack from the left flank and provide passes to Hashemian in the middle.
Iran’s problem has always been in the defense but despite this Branko never seriously experimented with other players in qualifying games, Asian games, or even friendlies to see if they can do a better job than Nosrati or Golmohammadi. The same can be said about our goalie. Branko says that Roudbarian or other goalies don’t have the international experience to replace Mirzapour but that’s because he never took the chance to allow them to play in those games so how can they gain the experience? It’s a catch 22 and the only way to break it would have been for Branko to take a chance and we know that that’s not in his nature.
As for Mahdavikia, we don’t have any player that could replace him and produce the same results for us even if he’s playing at 50%. I hope that he improves in the next few days before the Portugal game, even though the reality is that back injuries usually take a very long time to get sorted out, if ever.
Even though Daei’s departure is a positive development for Team Melli, with our long list of injured key players I’m not very optimistic about the Portugal game. At this point, I’m praying for some more good news before the end of the week.

I’m a fan of Mexico and I just wanted to tell you that you guys have nothing to be ashamed of. Iran played a good game that had me biting my nails most of the game. I think you have an even chance at beating Portugal. You guys can still qualify.

they have no chance of beating portugal. maybe when it starts to rain cats and dogs. they have a chance just like they have chance of winning a war. viva portugal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t forget about president Ahmadinejad’s role in our defeat! Because of his comments about holocaust nobody played any friendly with us and here is the result! Mexico played friendly with strong opponents one after the other, they lost some friendlies, but they won the one which counts!

Portugal couldn’t take out a weak Angola team. It seems more unlikely that they will just run over a good Iran team.

Daniel,
I think Angola preformed pretty good. They played very solid defensively!

Tony, Portugal means orange in Persian. We are going to squeeze Portugal then toss them around a bit then peel them and eat them.
Iran has a lot to lose more than Orange ☺ (sorry Portugal). I am sure will see an exciting match.
