Iran vs. Argentina in the Round of 16!

January 19th, 2006 | By: Afshin Afshar | 6 Comments »

I have an Argentine friend whom I love dearly. We always poke fun at each other by singling out the oddities in our ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Sure enough football always has a part in our conversations.

The other day he stopped by to tell me that in theory Iran and Argentina could face each other in the second round. That caught me by surprise because up to then I had spent no time trying to figure out any possible second round match ups.

A quick look proved my friend 100% correct. Winner of Group C will face the Runner-up of Group D and Winner of Group D will face the Runner-up of Group C.

To be honest, I can’t see Iran winning Group C, but with some luck they can finish second.

For their part, Argentina is in what is arguably the toughest group in this year’s World Cup. But they do have the necessary talent to top the Dutch and the Serbs to win the group.

After spending all that time to find out that we may indeed get our wish, we both decided that for safety’s sake we better not plan to watch the game together! Words might be said, tempers might flare, and items might fly across the living room. That may be just a bit too much, we both agreed.

With about 141 days to go, we have plenty of time to trash talk and tease each other. Of course, he has two World Cup trophies to back him up, but no trophy has ever stopped me from running my mouth!

Would love to see how Ali Karimi would fair against Argentina’s midfield. Any of Iranian players play with his style? So much fun to watch.

Hey Wood,

Argentina’s midfield is very talented. I can’t think of many individuals that can single handedly do well against them.

Now, if you want to compare Iran’s midfield against Argentina’s, while I would still give the edge to Argentina, I’d tell you that Iran could handle themselves better than some might expect.

Cheers,

Afshin

Iran will finish first in their group for sure, Argentina might finish 2nd in the other group so they might face each other in round of 16. I predict an Iran win, I mean if Argentina couldn’t beat us in 78 just before they won the world cup, there is no way they can beat us now. Plus Iran has always done great against south American opponents. As a matter of fact the only SA team that has a winning record against us is Peru of all teams!

Mate, Poppa, Chippa and Grella and Mark Viduka, they’re some of the arsenal us Aussies have at our disposal!!!!
Vinnie Grella and Lucas Neill will play well 4 the Socceroos!!!

And mate, i tel ya, that bloody american coach who said that our Socceroos were only at the World Cup to make up the numbers, he can get f-ed!!!! Coz the yankees are doin shithouse. They were flogged by the Czechs and The Azzurri weren’t even trying. You watch, america won’t even beat Ghana or progress to the second round!
