Iranian Women and football

March 12th, 2006 | By: Afshin Afshar | No Comments »

Many of you may not know this, but Iranian women do participate in organized football, which makes their ban from football stadiums even more puzzling.

Anyhow, as of a year ago, they started participating in International tournaments organized by Islamic countries.

However, Iranian women have to jump through more hoops and put up with many more restrictions than their Islamic counterparts. For example their uniforms has to be designed such that no part of their skin, face and hands excluded, not show.

As many of you know, wearing long sleeve jerseys and warm-up pants, in addition to a headscarf, while playing football in hot weather is not that much fun. But one must admire the love these women have for the game.

Their commitment to the game and their desire to push the limits drives them to excel even under these difficult circumstances.

My hat is off to my countrywomen for their grit and desire to be the best they can be.
