Not in Asia please!
Bob asks everyone “Which Country do you want to Host a Future World Cup?”
I am sure there are many countries that can do a fine job, but for goodness sake do NOT have it in Asia!!
Don’t get me wrong, I am an Asian and I think Korea and Japan did a fantastic job in 2002. I am sure there are other Asian countries that can do a fine job too, but I am plea is based on pure self-interest here!
You see, I live in California. During 2002 WC live games were broadcasted from midnight to six in the morning our time! For one full month I had to schedule my sleep around games in 30 minute increments. I had to grab an hour or two in early evening, right after work, before I woke up for the midnight game.
During Korea-Japan I often fell to sleep behind my desk at work. I yawned during meetings, nodded off during conference calls, and snored during presentations when the lights were dimmed!
Once I fell to sleep while I was on the phone talking to my Dad, only to wake up a couple of hours later drooling all over the place with the phone going beep-beep-beep!
One evening I fell to sleep in a Pub while I was having a beer with a friend of mine.
I am not even going to mention embarrassing situations involving my girlfriend, but at least she knew what was wrong. My boss and colleagues at work had no idea, so they just stared at me with pity in their eyes each time I started a sentence and forgot what I was going to say half the way through, or snapped out of my nap during a meeting to make a totally off topic remark.
I am not sure, but I may have even jumped up and shouted “Shoot, shoot!” once or twice!
I survived all of that, but I was younger then. I can not envision myself doing this ever again. So please, please, please NOT in Asia!

I went zombie too watching games at 3 or 4 am… terrible.

I’m still trying to recover from the lack of sleep I put myself through in 2002.

What do you think us people in Australia are going to have to go through this year, though?
Games start at 11 pm, 2am and 5am. Well, I’ve been practicing by watching the Champions league games, which are shown at 4:30am.
There is a saying here, that we sleep for four years so we can be awake for one month.

Gus, I feel your pain man! Come over to California, and I let you have my couch which is conveniently located in front of a 42″ flat panel TV! However, I expect the same when the games come to the Down Under or Asia!
