Asia Group B’s big mess

June 9th, 2009 | By: Afshin Afshar | 7 Comments »

Afshin Ghotbi With less than 24 hours left to the kickoff of the crucial qualifying match between Iran and UAE, many of us Team Melli fans keep running and re-running different scenarios in our minds. That is in the nature of football fans all around the world, but for us Team Melli fans it is very simple:

Korea Republic are through. Congratulations to all Korea Republic fans.

Iran, KSA, and Korea DPR are competing for the last automatic qualifying spot and the playoff route in Asia Group B.

Team Melli must defeat UAE tomorrow morning and Korea Republic a week later, and hope that Korea Republic can defeat KSA tomorrow. We will be guaranteed at least a playoff spot in this case.

If KSA defeats Korea Republic, and then lose to Korea DPR a week later, we are out!

But if KSA defeat Korea DPR, Iran will get to try again against third place team in Group A for the right to play New Zealand.

A KSA and Korea DPR draw would be to our advantage, but a KSA and Korea Republic draw does not make much of a difference.

Simple, isn’t it? :-P

Something is not right wich what you have written… Let me figure it out:

“If Korea Republic lose to KSA, and then lose to Korea DPR a week later, we are out”. I think you mean if Korea Rebpubnlic lose to KSA, and then KSA lose to Korea DPR a week later, we are out. Because Korea Republic is not going to play DPR again!!!! :)

Ok! Now I think I get and you are right. Too many things have to go right for us to qualify automatically!!!!! No chance!!! I’m still hoping though!!!

Doo doo roo doo doo Iran.

I have to admit, it is rather complicated, as not all teams have played the same number of games!

Bright side for tomorrow’s match:

No more Chinese referees!!! The referees for UAE game are from Uzbakestan and hopefully less biased and more fair. :)

If we earn 6 points from next two matches, we have 89% chance to advance (straight to WC an/or go to play-off.)

If we rather earn 4 points, then our chance drops to 44%

If we eran 4 points and KSA loses to S. Korea, our chance will go back up to 89%. Therefore, tomorrows’ win is very crucial as the one point we got in N. Korea!!!

Doo Dooo Rooo Doo Doo.. Iran

The game just ended

KSA 0 – 0 Korea Republic

This is not an ideal result for us, but it is better than a KSA win.
