Iran’s “Little Shchumacher”

Laleh Seddigh aka. Little Schumacher

This is not about football, but since we have been hearing a lot about Iranian women and their struggle to get the right to attend sports events, I think it is important for people outside of Iran to understand that Iranian women are not taking all of this sitting down. In big or small ways many of them are doing what they can to push the boundaries and break the gender barriers.

Although not all of what they do may be a conscious and concerted effort for achieving equality, nevertheless it is making headways and is surely getting a lot notice at different levels.

One of these women is the 28 year-old racecar driver Lalaeh Seddigh, nick named “Little Schumacher” by her fans.

I have been following her racing career for a few years now. I first heard about her through some friends and then read an article about her in the New York Times. Physically, she is very small, but her heart and courage are as big as they come.

It is, isn’t it? One wonders how different Iran could be if women could participate in all the national and day-to-day affairs as equal partners.

I hope this little lady can inspire more women in Iran to push back this idiotic sexist mentality of the government, and help prove to men the equal capabilities inherent in all women so that Iranian men can also work towards equality for women in Iran. Before I read the article I was going to post that I met many Persian women in college working towards graduate degrees proving their intellectual capacity and it was a pleasant suprise to read that Lalaeh is working towards a PH.D. no less. Rock on, Lalaeh! Thanks for the story Afshin its a great counterbalance to the stupidity of the “Supreme Leader”.
