Let’s get over it and enjoy the rest of the WC

An Iranian football fan reacts in Tehran to the loss of his national team against Mexico 11 June 2006. Mexico scored twice in three second-half minutes to beat Iran 3-1 today and give a massive boost to their bid to go past the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time. (HASSAN AMMAR/AFP/Getty Images)

I know we are all upset. But let’s pause for a few seconds and think why we lost this game. I can sum up the answer into three short bullet points:

1) Mirzapour and Rezaei’s mistake
2) Ineffective offensive line
3) Coaching decisions and tactics

Let us say that the first one can happen to any player in any given game, but the last two are coaching related. I wrote about this after my nerves settled a little bit, but I was still upset, so take it with a grain of salt :)

Anyway, let’s put this game behind us. Let’s show our Mexican friends that we are good sportsmen by congratulating them for the win and then hope that we do better in the next two games.

Remember, this is supposed to be a big festival of fun for football fans from all around the world. Unfortunately, there has to be winners and losers and today we were at the losing end.

I disagree atefe jAn. I think Mexico played a much better second half than we did.

Let’s do not make negative comments about the other team. After all everyone wants to win just as much as we do.

Let’s instead look at what we did wrong, and hope that we do not repeat the same mistakes again.

Karimi limped out of the game. I had an email from someone who was there watching the match.

His ankle is still hurting.

I’m just wondering if national pride means less to Daei than setting another record for him? What happened to the quote “cho Iran nabashad, tane man mabad” I guess I’m wondering what is going on in his head and if ANY of our players or coaching staff is man enough to confront him. Iran doesn’t need any more negative press. What do you guys think?

Iran was impressive to watch, and I can’t belive Karimi didnt get that penalty, it was too obvious. Anyway Mexico played a very good game and were DETERMINED to win, and they did that. One thing that did ruin the game though, was the ability of the Iranians to attack, but not being able to finish off those attacks. Just like the Ivory Coast, they are a very good team no doubt, but to be able to win in a competition such as the World Cup you need the ability to finish off those attacks, or you will be punished inevitably by the opponents next goal. Thats all i have to say. These good teams must practice on their clinical finsishing to succeed.

I think the main guilty is Branko. I dont know why we should defend, when we showed in the 1st half that we can offend so good and even can beat Mexico if we offend. i dont why Daie sould play as our only striker when he play in his clup a step back and not the striker, and we see he is more better in that situation, he can send golden passes for his teammates, and also he score more there. i dont know why we shoudnt substitute Mahdavikia for another player when he is playing bad and selfishing.there are alot of other mistakes there. why does Branko do these?, I dont know!

Hi everyone!! I’m from Mexico, and I just wanted to congratulate you guys for the fantastic game!! I must say, you gave us a run for our money on the first half, you’re a pretty good team, but,as someone said before me, you need to work on the definition on your attacks. Anyways, you played a great game. Also, the bouquet of flowers the Iranian team gave our goalkeeper, Oswaldo Sánchez, due to the passing of his father two days ago was a very classy detail!! Everyone in Mexico is commenting on that, we are very very touched!! Good luck on your next game!!

Thank’s a lot “underdog”.”Determination” was the word i was looking for..or as great Mexicans say “si se puede” i still rememmber the great effort they put out to come back against Netherland and Belgium games in previous World Cups…
I could also see the same kind of determination in Turkey’s team in the last World cup which ALMOST made it to the end,if it was not shaken by the superpower Brazil….
Was it because of a great coach they had? was it because of the great timely substitution he made?…..Naaaaaa I don’t think so…THEY (THE TEAM)WAS DETERMINED…no question about it….
SO…CAN…WE..
PISH TA PAYAN EI JAVIDAN IRAN…

- but this was different !
The Mirzapour’s mistake is repeating permanently in every Important match …

SHIT TO MIRZAPOUR … HE, HIMSELF, RENDERED ALL OF THE OTHER PLAYER’s EFFORTS USELESS…

i appreciate your positivism Afshin.
I actually thought Iran were not great. Karimi was indeed the main fuel in the team until he was replace, but you have to acknowledge that pretty much all of his actions were flashy but getting nowhere.
Actually, if i had to suggest something to Iran, would be to watch the replay of Angola vs Portugal. Or T&T against Sweden for that matter. Angola were very good at pressing the opposition. If Iran is going to get anything out of the tournament, they need to press and tighten the defence. After that, anything can happen. Mexico weren’t great either.
In lacking defensive organization, i think Iran were probably the worst team of the tournament so far.

Dear Ricardo
I tend to de-appreciate YOUR “positivism” on this matter..everybody “ACKNOWLEDGES” that Iran did not play a great game.defensively or offensively. And they certainley have better teams to learn from……

so what exactly do you mea,n navid?
i’m sure Iran are better than yesterday otherwise they wouldn’t have been in the wc in the first place.
My point is simply, that by sorting their organization out and pressing the opposition they would put themselves in a position where their forwards (Karimi mainly) can make something happen. But without the organization, all the runs forward won’t make much of a difference.

I see that almost everybody blames Daei for the game. We all know he is too old and he has not done much in last few games including Mexico game. But I do not really think he was the reason we lost! There was a lot more involved. It was more lack of directions and a “planned” defensive play in 2nd half. I see the couch responsible for these problems not individual players. Mirzapour and Rezai made mistakes but as i have mentined before. If you try to defend for 45 minutes you should expect this to happen. Even best defenders make mistakes. And also as someone here mentioned, the defensive mistakes are a result of constant pressure from opponents! If we would have put the same type of pressure on Mexico, I guarantee you that they would have made defensive mistakes as well and we would have scored.

Anahita,

I know we should move on! And yes maybe there still is hope! But it makes you mad when we have such a good opportunity and we wasted it over some coach made decisions. Something we could have avoided only if he would have followed his own pledges and statements he had made before the game. It makes you mad to see after all he preached, he did the same thing as all the other incompetent coaches who lacked confidence in our team had done. After 6 years with Team Melli, I beleived him when he said he had got to know our team well! In fact, i was impressed with his confident gestures and always thought the critics were unfaire.

You are wrong about “this is supposed to be a big festival of fun for football fans from all around the world”. You wait 4 years for this event not to have fun; to win or at least, present a good performance. Not only I hadn’t fun, I was very mad of stupidity and lake of strategy knowledge of coach/s and also the Capitan which should change the tactics. Something went wrong in half time we need to found out what. In addition, didn’t we have an Iranian to be coach?

Was I the only one annoyed at the political commentary about a sporting event? I thought that sportsmanship was to transcend politics or other things.

Anyway – very bad form for ABC.

I wrote a letter to them.

So should you.

Kia,

Mexicans fans swarmed the stadium. I told ya, don’t underestimate us. We are the second largest number of non-Europeans in Germany (only behind Brazil).

There were 35,000 Mexicans in the stadium and 15,000 to 20,000 outside. It has been commented that a large number of Iranians sold their tickets to us.

You could hear the stadium soaring with the Mexican National Anthem, the Cielito Lindo, the Ole, Ole! We rocked Nuremberg.
