Player Profile: Ali Karimi
28 year old Ali Karimi is one of the most popular players amongst Iran’s fanatic football fans. They lovingly call him “The Wizard” for his sometimes dazzling ball handling techniques. He now plays his football for the German giants Bayern Munich, but he started developing his dribbling techniques in streets of Tehran playing “Gol Koochik” (Small Goal).
Gol Koochik is a form of urban football played in tight streets and alleys where you have to play around all sorts of urban barricades from light poles to moving cars. The game is played with plastic balls which cost only a few cents, and is all about quickness and fancy dribbling tricks.
Many Iranian fans who play or have played some Gol Koochik of their own love Karimi as he was one of their own.
One of the things that make this superstar so especial in the eyes of his fans is his humble demeanor. Even though he is already a superstar in Iran and Asia, he never acts as if he is above the rest and always talks about bettering himself on and off the field.
This summer Ali will have the opportunity to show a couple of his Gol Koochik tricks to the rest of the world.
