This year’s World Cup songs

Mamad Booghi

I don’t know about you Team Melli fans, but the song chosen as the World Cup song for Team Melli did not impress me much. Apparently most of this year’s World Cup pop songs are bombs!

I heard it on Iranian radio and decided that I am going do without a new song and stick to the traditional chants, a few of which are as follows:

Batcheh-haa hamleh konid (loosely translated into “Attack boys, attack!)

Iran chi kaaresh mikoneh? Sooraakh sooraakhesh miknoeh! (This one refers to the opponent’s net and what Iran will do to it. The question goes “What will Iran do to it?” The answer is “poke it full of holes!”

And my all time favorite, the oldie but goodie:

Doo doo roo doo doo! IRAN!

In the 60s there was a guy (he has passed away since) named Mohammad who was a huge soccer fan. For years he brought his homemade horns to the games and blew them to rally the crowed behind the team. The fans nicknamed him “Mamad booghi”, meaning “Mohammad the horn blower”.

He would blow his horns in a rhythmic sequence at the end of which the fans would scream “IRAN!!”

When Mohammad was not around, the fans jus replaced the sound of his horns by the verbal replication that goes like;

Doo doo roo doo doo!

So, if you are watching a Team Melli game with Iranians, and some nut like me spontaneously yells out “Doo doo roo doo doo”, just respond with “IRAN!” as loud as you can and you’ll be one of us :)
