Iranian Professional League Round 1 Wrap

The first round of the Iranian PL is now behind us. The two Tehran giants, Esteghlal and Perspolis won their matches, reigning champions Saipa that are coached by former Team Melli skipper Ali Daei lost, as did Abu-Moslem which is coached by yet another former TM star Khodadad Azizi. Cup winners Sepahan won their match as expected.
Even though he had been with the team for only four days and was not involved with the team’s preparations for this round, Perspolis coach Afshin Ghotbi must be relived. Had they lost the opening, some diehard Perspolis fans would have surely pointed fingers at him. He is safe for now.
The match between the two Esteghlals (Tehran and Ahvaz) was one of the most exciting matches in the last two IPL seasons. Both teams had full intention of winning all three points. At the end Tehran proved to be better organized, more talented, and somewhat luckier. Esteghlal coach Naser Hejazi is also safe for now.
I have high hopes for Sepahan of Isfahan this year. They represent Iran in the AFC Champions League and have already made it to the 2nd round. They are well managed and coached. Luka Bonacic has done a good job of making Sepahan a cohesive team. They won, so Bonacic is safe as well.
Ali Daei and Khodadad Azizi’s teams, Saipa and Abu-Moslem are another story. I think They will get it together in the next round, but Saipa has lost a few key players, and Abu-Moslem is just not deep enough to last the entire season. Azizi was quoted to have said if things do not improve he will look into his youth team for help! How much help can his youth provide is not clear.
