Mexico focusing attention on Iran

Okay, so it is not only us Team Melli fans who are putting so much emphasis on the first game (againt Mexico). Mexico’s players are thinking the same thing.

When you think about it, it all makes sense. If the get three points out of Iran, the pressure is somewhat off against Portugal as they are anticipating less of a challenge from Angola.

Of course, as you can see in our blog (Mexico) we’ve been focusing on Iran since May, we know it’s the most important game in the first round, not only because IRan is a good team and has improved a lot since Korea-Japan, but because it’s our first game.

The only thing that has us a little more relaxed is the injuries that Team Melli is having.

Good Luck
My pick: Mexico 2 - 1 Iran

Hi Luis, how about a little frindly wager?

I say 2-1 Iran.

We have to get both the result and the score right. The loser will buy the winner’s national jersy of choice, sign it:

“To the winner of the 2006 Tri-Colors match”

And mail it to him?

Hello Luis,
I would also like some action on the wager. I am also picking Iran to beat Mexico 2-1. My offer is the same as Afshin. I am a fan of Portugal and believe that Portugal and Iran will advance (Sorry Mex).

Hi Beto;

Good to see your optimistic about Portugal, I am positive Mexico will pass on 1st place, and its going to be a though battle for the second spot between Iran and Portugal (don’t think Angola will give us a surprise)

Ok. So if Iran loses 2-1 I’ll buy only 1 Jersey (I don’t need 2)so what’s your bet? we could do another pick. How about 1-0

What say you?

I’m not very knowledgeable about football but even I noticed something went terribly wrong in the second half for Iran. I read somewhere that the second half is the coach’s game. If that’s true, why would Ivankovic have them change their game when they’re doing well? Does he not know the expression “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”? Am I missing something? My gut tells me Iran has an excellent team that made bad choices.

As far as I know iran lost 4-0. It could have been 7 or 8-0 easily. Iran is ranked 40th in the world and they are by no means a team that deserves anything better than that ranking. By the way, the world cup is a farse. If you take into account that 16 teams that are ranked in the top 20 come from Europe the only competition that I accept as being competitive is the European championship. iran is crap as are the other crap teams that make it into the first round of the world cup.
