Online petition on behalf of Iranian women

March 7th, 2006 | By: Afshin Afshar | 4 Comments »

In light of what happened in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, a couple of friends of mine who happened to be big football fans put together an online petition on behalf of Iranian women who are being locked out of sports arenas all around the country.

We think that sports organizations all around the world can and should make the issue of women’s access to stadiums one of their policies.

I think this, as an issue, is comparable to the race issue that FIFA and UEFA have correctly picked up as a cause.

[...] There are plenty of social issues out there as well that deserve our attention. The fact that women weren’t allowed to watch Iran’s national team play last month is an outrage. The continued violence in Cote d’Ivoire is something more countries around the world should care about. And on and on. [...]
