Is it the Basques in January or ….

No sooner had the IFF announced the friendly match against the Basque select team in January than the Iranian ambassador to Spain spoke against it!

Davoud Salehi, the Iranian ambassador to Spain, told Fars News Agency that he learned of the match through the news media, and feels like it is not a good idea for the Team Melli to play against a state team! He thinks the game should be against the Spanish national team, the champions of Europe.

He told reporters that because of the good relationship the two countries enjoy, scheduling a match against Spanish national team should present no problems; however, and official request should have been submitted to the Spanish Federation much sooner.

I am sure most Iranian football fans, just like Me. Salehi, would love to see Team Melli play against Spain, but we certainly would rather have the Basques if they were to only available options at this point.

At this point there are no credible news suggesting the Iran has or may contact the Spanish Football Federation regarding a possible friendly with Spain.
