Team Melli – US friendly unlikely to happen

August 18th, 2009 | By: Afshin Afshar | 2 Comments »

Team Melli practice session Well, everyone seems to be going back and forth on this, but I think this time it is the American side that is having cold feet.

According to a report published in English language Tehran Times, Ali Kaffashian the president of the Iranian Football Federation told reporters that Iran has expressed its desire to go on with a friendly in November, but the Americans have not followed through.

Earlier in the week Kaffashian had told reporters that should the US team agrees to a match in Iran, the game would be scheduled for November.

Under the current political climate, I find it very difficult to believe that the US would commit to a friendly against Iran. As far as Iran’s football is concerned, a solid country with good players.

As far as currently holding US citizens (and just releasing a US journalist), I don’t think the Gov of the US would allow a friendly to be played.

I’m all for it but, again, the political climate makes it difficult. So to say the US has cold feet should be explained beyond that statement.

Dear Unbelievable,

I agree with most, if not all, your comments.

Thanks,
